Four arrested in failed bid to rob ATM kiosk

Mumbai police have arrested four youth for failed attempt to rob an ATM machine of State Bank of India (SBI) in Andheri (west). Based on the technical evidences all the four accused — Amir Sherkhan Shaikh (22), Chandrashe­khar Bhimrao Khandare (20), Raj Prahlad Karotiya (25) and Dharmesh Purushotta­m Bariya (20) – were arrested by Malwani police on January 27 and were handed over to Versova police.

They had entered the ATM kiosk with a heavy metal object to smash the ATM kiosk to loot cash from it. “All of them had covered the face with handkerchi­ef but the CCTV camera installed above the kiosk captured them smashing the kiosk. Despite repetitive attempts the robbers could not manage to get the access of cash tray of kiosk. While they were landing blows on the machine, one of them heard a sound outside ATM booth. They got scared and left the place after packing up immediatel­y,” said an officer attached to Versova police station where the case was registered.

The investigat­ors scrutinise­d the CCTV footage, whose grab was circulated in all the police stations of Mumbai. A team of six officers including PSI Ganpat Dhaygude, Awhad, Kamble and others was formed to trace the accused.

Meanwhile, the Malwani police got alarmed after they saw CCTV grab of four youth, who live in Madh area of Malwani.

Malwani police picked them up one by one. During the preliminar­y investigat­ion we realised that all of them are history sheeters, said Vikram Deshmane, Deputy Commission­er of Police (DCP) Zone XI.

“There are several theft cases of house break-in, motor vehicles as well as ATM robbery have been registered against them. They have been booked in five different cases registered at Versova police station,” said another officer from Versova police station.

The police said six months ago the same gang had looted an ATM of United Bank of India (UBI) at Bharatnaga­r in Andheri (west). Besides this, the gang had looted an ATM of SBI bank in Santa Cruz. Shaikh and Karotiya had stolen motorcycle­s from Nana-Nani Park and society’s parking in seven bungalows of Andheri (west).

They have been booked under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
