Chums mowed down, kin cremate them together

- DIWAKAR SHARMA & SURESH GOLANI

A dumper crushed two young friends to death on the Western Express Highway, opposite Dashmamata temple, in Borivali East, on Tuesday night. It was easily one of the deadliest accidents on the highway as the innards of the deceased spilled out on the road after the dumper, laden with soil, mowed them down.On seeing the condition of the bodies, a newly-recruited female investigating officer in the case, felt nauseated and had to be admitted to hospital

They were identified as Nainesh Kirtikumar Rathod and Pinki Dingambarsinh Chouhan (20). Both were residents of Bhayandar (East), said zonal DCP, Dr Vinaykumar Rathod.

Rathod was the only child of his parents. His father is a central government employee and Chouhan, who lived with her parents and three siblings, was a third-year commerce student. Rathod, who had just completed his diploma in civil engineering and was working in a multinational company, was returning from work; Chouhan was riding pillion with him.

Their bodies were handed over to their respective families after the post mortem examination at Bhagwati hospital. Sources said that the two were close friends and lived in the same complex but in two different buildings. Both the families were shocked and devastated on seeing the bodies and were in no condition to speak.

Since they were friends and grew up together, the two families decided to cremate them simultaneously.

The two-wheeler, surprisingly, was intact with only minor dents. However, the impact threw off the two youngsters.

After the accident, a traffic snarl lasted for nearly half an hour as passers-by stopped their vehicles to examine the two badly mangled bodies.
