WHAT: Makarand Deshpande’s iconic Hindi play – Sir, Sir Sarla will now open in GUJARATI. Directed by Makarand himself, this will be his debut in Gujarati theatre. ‘LOVE’ the only subject that has no curriculum. An unfelt, untold story of a professor and his students after they have graduated – a play between memory and reality begins. Sarla’s memory manifests itself into reality. Phanidhar and Sir are caught in a tornado of emotions.

Bonjour India 2017-18

WHAT: Following the launch of Bonjour India - incubating dreams, ideas and projects which aim to move the partnershi­p between India and France into the future, Kolkata saw the beginning of French band Mezcal Jazz Unit’s 5 city tour with the Indian tabla maestro, Bickram Ghosh in collaborat­ion with Gatecrash and with the support of the network of Alliances Françaises. Mezcal Jazz Unit will perform at G5A Foundation this Saturday. Bonjour India has already presented some exemplary music acts by French artists, mostly in collaborat­ion with Indian Musicians, in the previous months. Taking this initiative forward, they will be introducin­g the Indian audience to a strong collaborat­ive jazz project.

A Tribute to Jazz Master Ahmad Jamal

WHAT: Just as in Hindustani classical music, improvisat­ion is the highest expression of the art of jazz. Through this process, new music is birthed and the art continues to evolve. The programme will begin with Susan Mazer performing several solo jazz standards. She will later be joined by woodwinds specialist Dallas Smith, along with Hungarian drummer Aron Nyiro and French percussion­ist Emmanuel Simon. The concert will feature a special guest appearance by Mumbai Kathak dancer Aditi Bhagwat, who will co-create a fusion of traditiona­l Indian dance and American jazz. This concert is a tribute to the music, artistry, and life of 87-year-old pianist/composer Ahmad Jamal. Mazer and Smith have continued contact with Ahmad Jamal and hope to present a recording of this concert to him for his enjoyment. WHEN: Today, 7 pm onwards

WHAT: A talented youngster with passion for music Bhaggesh Marathe a vocalist gifted with a silvery voice will perform in ‘Sursagar’ a rising star every month accompanie­d by Swapnil Bhise on (Tabla) and Siddesh Bicholkar on (Harmonium). Bhaggesh Marathe, grandson of the legendary vocalist Pandit Ram Marathe started learning tabla at the age of 4 and continued for almost 15 years with various gurus like Shri Prabhu Ghate, his uncle Shri Mukund Marathe, Pt. Mukundraj Deo and Shri Gajanan Raul (disciple of Ustad Allarkha Khan Sahib). He was mesmerised with Pt.
