Mankhurd scrap yard fire leaves entire area shrouded under pollution

A fire that broke out in the illegal scrap yard in Mankurd Mumbai on Sunday early morning 6 am, resulted in increasing the level of air pollutants and smog in the entire area.

The place was left with a thick cover of pollution. According to Fire brigade control officer after conducting six hours of the rescue operation, the fire came under control only by 12 pm afternoon.

Around 17 fire engines and 10 water tankers were rushed to the spot for the rescue operation. The fire confined to plastic drums, packing material, the stock of oil, scrap material, bisleri bottles, electric wiring, plywood, wooden furniture, scrap wiring, the stock of chemical and wooden sheet partition etc. in an area of about 1000x800 sq ft on which 50 to 60 shops were spread. Rajendra Chaudhari the Deputy Chief Fire Officer (CFO) stated,"The smoke was huge, the toxic gas made the rescue operation quite difficult, however, the firefighte­rs were using their breathing apparatus, therefore no casualty been reported.

But huge environmen­t destructio­n has happened. Also, the civic ward assistant Commission­er has been asked to lodge a First Informatio­n Report (FIR) against the illegal activities which were going on. In addition, the illegal structures have been asked to demolish by our Chief Fire Officer."

The fire brigade is yet to ascertain the exact cause of the fire. While a minor fire was also reported in Sakinaka Jaidev restaurant. The hotel was closed when the fire erupted. One fire engine was sent to the spot to douse the fire and no injury been reported.
