For students, the choice isn’t restricted to just Science, Commerce & Arts after HSC anymore

- RONALD RODRIGUES

It’s never too late! Summer vacations are the best time to decide what you want to do ahead. Students who have appeared for the recent Class 12 board examinations can use this time to decide what career they want to opt for and courses which they wish to study. It’s no longer just Science, Commerce or Arts but it is much more as per educationists.

And if students feel there are limited options after completion of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), they ought to check the variety of surplus courses which may open new doors to infinite opportunities. Courses have moved from the basic Science, Commerce and Arts to creative, management, literature, communication, media, banking, Information Technology (IT), technical, medical, hospitality, dance, drama, music, art, design, fashion, embroidery, coding, travel, tourism, photography, film making, digital art, leadership, psychology, politics, social work, literature and the list goes on.

DO NOT RESTRICT YOURSELF

"Do not restrict Yourself," is the subtle message given loud and clear to students by education experts as there are innumerable arenas which can be explored. Marilyn Ignatius, an educationist, said, "Why stick to the normal course and try to fit in the crowd? Instead, why not try something different and think outside the box? Students can always try something unique as now there are so many courses available which can tap the interests of each and every student. Post HSC is a crucial time and students shoud decide their flight at this hour and then pick up a course and explore it completely by opening their wings."

IT'S ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT TO DO, NOT OTHERS

As there are large number of opportunities which can confuse and influence, students ought to select what they want to do. Ignatius added, "Opportunities are plenty and scope is just widening but it really depends on what you want to do. It all boils down to what is the interest of a particular student. Students should not let the influence of any family, friend or teacher affect their decision, at least not now when they are already 18 and have listened to their folks all this time."

IT’S NOT ABOUT THE COURSE, BUT YOUR INTERESTS

"If a particular course does not interest you then do not drag yourself through it," said Arvind Venkat, a professor. Venkat added, "Courses are going to sound flowery and appear attractive but students should introspect if the elements of a particular course interest them. A lot of students are now taking up Media because it is creative but if it does not interest you then there is no point." Students can possibly try out internships or small time work during vacations to figure out the actual scenario in a particular course.

IT’S ALRIGHT TO JUGGLE AND SHIFT COURSES

From Science to psychology, from Arts to technical or from Commerce to Creative Writing, students are often seen shifting streams and taking up completely new courses. Sophia Jain, a student said, "I shifted from Science to film making becasue I knew I was inclined towards the art and process of film making. Though I studied Science till HSC I do not regret because now I am into films and I enjoy the process. At least I did not waste my academic years after HSC by continuing to do what did not interest me. I feel we all should do what we really enjoy doing."

IT IS OKAY IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO

Some students just do not know what to do and it does not mean they are clueless or directionless as per educationists. Kartik Singh, an educationist said, "Some of us are always confused because either we are good in many things, lot of courses interest us, we can do well in many arenas or we are fine with any course. Such students can take up what interest them the most and still continue to do other things simultaneously. For example, a lot of engineers are into creative writing and many commerce experts are into technical stuff so students can always continue to explore."
