Gridder and crane collapse during installati­on of bridge, no one injured; traffic affected

A gridder along with a crane collapsed early Sunday morning on SV Road in Goregoan at MTNL junction during ongoing extension work of Sarvarkar bridge. Fortunatel­y no one got injured and had a lucky escape as per the official informatio­n. The civic officials said, "One of the gridder for the new bridge got dislocated during work and eventually collapsed along with the crane. While fire brigade and police officials immediatel­y rushed to the spot."

The officer from bridges department of BMC claimed that the extended bridge will provide much relief to motorists of western suburb. "However, though the work of the bridge commenced in the year 2015, but owing to the traffic permission the work got delayed. We are trying to complete the work by this monsoons itself. In addition, once the gridder are launched the work on constructi­ng mastic roads will start," added the official.

Meanwhile the traffic department had shut the lane where the gridder and crane collapsed until Sunday afternoon. Also, in order to avoid inconvenie­nce they asked people to take Sainath subway, Mrinal Tai Gore Bridge who commuting from or towards Goregoan and Malad. While commuters also asked to use Vasari hill, Chincholi Bunder or Prem Nagar Road to avoid traffic congestion if any.

The new extended bridge will be 500 metres long. While one gridder already been launched on Sunday morning another will be launched in night time said the officer. While Activist Godfrey Pimenta slammed the civic officials for not having any safety measures while carrying out such work. "Its fortunate that no one got injured or else this would have been major tragedy," said Pimenta.
