Music lovers are in for a thrill: Jazz singer Callaway to perform for first time in India

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Music lovers are in for a thrill as American jazz singer and songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway will be performing on Thursday at 7 pm at GR Raheja Auditorium, Balgandharva Rangamandir, Bandra (West). Callaway aims to initiate some collaborations between India and America as she intents to encourage the youth to try new and different styles of music.

Music is like a vessel for inspiration and ideas, claims Callaway as she masters her style of jazz and pop music along with a touch of broadway and classical.

Callaway said, “Music is for everyone as every individual is different and hence every individual connects in a unique way. The youth have new ideas, methods and techniques to create their own kind of music which is fun and exciting.”

Callaway, best known for writing and singing the theme song for the television series The Nanny, is on her first tour to India. She will be performing with Ted Rosentha, an American jazz pianist. Callaway said, “I am hoping for some collaborations with Indian music artists, singers and performers. Music can connect to anyone from any region of the world as today we live in a really small world due to advancement of technology.”

Performing jazz at different regions of the world, Callaway was voted by Broadwayworld.com as Performer of The Year. On this tour to India, Callaway aims to tap the youth and involve them to create a different style of music. She has been inspired by Indian culture and has written a song based on the inspiration from Rigveda.

Spontaneous singing is one of the enthralling factors of jazz music. Callaway revealed, “Often, I make my music on the spot on stage and sing a new song with new tunes and notes. Spontaneous music is an art of jazz style as it thrills the audience and creates something which was never heard before. The youth got to learn from the past and then unlearn it entirely to learn and create something new. We got to evolve and change at every moment as life is short and every day is a new day.”
