Woman attempts suicide at Mumbai Central stn, blames DeMon & GST

- STAFF REPORTER

Even as the union government claims that the problems caused by demonetisation and Goods and Services Tax (GST) have been fully resolved, the impact of these two financial decisions still continues to horrify citizens. One such instance was witnessed at Mumbai Central railway station on Monday when a woman attempted to commit suicide there while blaming demonetisation and GST. The lady was, however, saved by a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer.

Savita Bootiya (40) stood in front of a Churchgate-bound local train claiming she was being harassed by money-lenders for loans worth Rs 5 lakh.

One of her relatives confirmed, “Before GST and demonetisation, Savita had decided to start a business. It was running properly, however, soon after the two financial decisions were implemented, she suffered a huge loss and became debt-ridden and was forced to avail around Rs five lakh of loans.”

“Since then she has been frustrated and under pressure to repay the loans. She was being harassed by moneylenders and was also disturbed mentally,” the relative added.

GRP official said on Monday afternoon that Savita tried to commit suicide as she was debt-ridden. “One of the security personnel present at the station took notice of her and saved Savita by pulling her back,” added Dattatray Pawar, Senior GRP official.

He added that her relative confirmed that she was mentally ill and had tried to commit suicide to avoid questions from money-lenders.
