Lawyer writes to CM, seeks probe

An advocate of the Bombay High Court has written a letter to the Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, and demanded probe into the death of a 17-year-old boy who died on April 14 in the police custody. The juvenile was sent to the Dongri observatio­n home after he was arrested by the Kurla Government Railway Police and handed over to the Wadala Railway Police Force in a theft case.

According to the letter written by Dipak Chattopadh­yay, advocate at the Bombay High Court, “As per the postmortem report by Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy hospital, Yeshu Gawli died due to pulmonary tuberculos­is. He was arrested for theft and was kept at the Dongri juvenile observatio­n home for ten days, prior to being admitted at JJ hospital on April 14. A thorough probe should be conducted in this matter and necessary action should be taken against authoritie­s found guilty.”

“The letter also states that there are no full-time doctors at the Dongri home. The government should look into the matter and appoint full-time doctors,” stated the letter.

Rekha Gawli, the mother of the 17-year-old boy has alleged that her son died due to custodial death after being beaten up by the Wadala Railway Police Force officials on April 12.

Speaking to The Free Press

Journal, Rekha Gawli, the mother of deceased said,“When I went to meet my son at the Dongri observatio­n home, he told me that the Wadala Railway Police Force officials had beaten him. My son had informed the Chief Magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) that he had been beaten up by the officials. He had complained of being in pain on April 5.”

“I requested the police and the home authoritie­s to take him to the hospital on April 12. I was told that he will be given medical care at the home. When he continued to complain of pain, the officials told me that no policemen from Wadala GRP was available to escort him to the hospital. My son was not suffering from any illness,” she added.

According to Sadanand Bhise, a doctor from JJ hospital, “The health condition of Yeshu was not good as he had a breathing problem and even had a complaint of chest pain. We started with the medication on the day he has been admitted to the hospital. But on April 14 he had his last breath and later the body was sent to the post-mortem.

Meanwhile, a judicial inquiry is being conducted in this matter.
