Kolpak is a big challenge for South Africa: De Kock
South African wicketkeeperbatsman Quinton de Kock on Thursday expressed concerns about Kolpak and termed it as a big challenge for his country.
“You know it’s tough thing in South African cricket. It’s always personal decision for players to sign Kolpak contract. We don’t know the reasoning behind signing Kolpak.
“I probably see the reason that is we have too much talent back home, I guess. It’s hard for the players to get in to the team so they opt for Kolpak,” de Kock said.
He was speaking at the promotional event of the Spintechs Spin Mat product that would help the batters to improve their batting skills on turning pitches.
This product is being marketed in India by Omtex, at the MIG Cricket Club in Bandra.
South Africa have list of talented cricketers like batsman Rilee Rossouw, Pacer Kyle Abbot, all-rounder David Wiese who recently opted for Kolpak. “It is not just in cricket. It is also hap- pening in some other sports in the country. Yes it’s a challenge for South Africa but, we have to take ahead on this challenge. There are couple of reasons.
We have to start making decisions now for better fu- ture. I think It’s going to get better hopefully. We are just hoping for the best,” de Kock, who has scored 774 one-day international runs against India in just 12 matches which included five centuries, said.
De kock who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League this edition said he is impressed by the competitive nature of his skipper Virat Kohli.
“Virat is very competitive by nature and what impressed me the most that he wants to be the best, and always wants to win. By that sort of attitude only good can come from it.
“He is not emotional actually. When you play against him he seems emotional sometimes, but now when I play with him he is not that emotional. Virat is very passionate about what he does,” de kock concluded.
