Ayurvedic drug to your heart’s rescue
Astudy published in an international journal has noted that an Ayurveda drug, BGR-34 — a concoction of Indian herbs — is effective in cutting down heart attack by fifty percent in diabetic patients.
The study also found that the glycosylated haemoglobin level (tested to monitor the long-term control of diabetes mellitus), of at least half of the patients who had participated in the clinical trial for the herbal drug was also under control.
The results hold importance given that achieving near normal glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) significantly decreases risk of microvascular and macrovascular complications causing organ and tissue damage.
Glycosylated haemoglobin is the haemoglobin in the Red Blood Cell (RBC) to which glucose is bound. As per the study, the clinical trial of the anti-diabetic potential of BGR-34 was conducted as per the Indian Council of Medical Research guidelines. This is probably for the first time that a study on any Indian herbal-based drug has been published in an international publication like the Journal of Traditional and Complementary Medicine.
The study noted that though there are many allopathic drugs which have been found effective in controlling blood glucose level, these were not preventive enough to prevent all the complications of diabetes.
