Students of Mumbai fail to make it to the toppers’ list

Students from Mumbai have not made it to the toppers’ list as Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 results were declaredon Saturday. Schools claimed the performanc­e of students and less number of schools in the city is one of the reasons why there are no toppers from Mumbai.

Over 11.06 lakh students appeared for Class 12 CBSE board examinatio­n which was conducted from March 5 to April 27, 2018 at 4,145 exam centres. While Mumbai lacked behind, the topper is Meghna Srivastava from Ghaziabad who scored 499 marks out of 500 (99.78 per cent) followed by Anoushka Chandra from Ghaziabad who secured the second position with 498 marks.

Schools of the city claimed there are less CBSE schools in Mumbai as compared to other regions while performanc­e of students and perception also plays an important role in scoring high marks. Kalpana Dwivedi, Principal of St Joseph School, said, “It all depends

on performanc­e of students in terms of their understand­ing, preparatio­n and potential. Lack of number of schools in Mumbai region is not the sole reason for no toppers from the city.”

Students of the city performed well by securing percentage­s above 95 even though they could not make it to the top 10 merit list. Saachi Jain, a student of RN Podar School, Santacruz became the city topper by scoring 97.8 per cent in the Science stream. Jain said, “I studied constantly as I was preparing for my engineerin­g entrance test. I am appearing for JEE advance and aim to become an engineer.” While, Harneet Singh of RN Podar, Santacruz scored 98 per cent in Commerce. Singh said, “I never expected such high marks but I gave my best in the examinatio­n. I want to pursue Economics ahead and plan to study or work abroad once I complete my post-graduation.” Ashmita Jain of St Joseph School, scored 97.2 per cent in Science to become the topper of her school. Trivandrum, Chennai and Delhi topped the regions with the highest pass percentage across all regions of India. Girls performed better than boys as the pass percentage of girls is 88.31 compared to that of boys which is 78.99 per cent.
