Mango prices halve in Mumbai as supply doubles before season-end

- RAHUL DHURI

Mango prices have halved on week in the wholesale market of Vashi's Agricultural Produce Market Committee as supply doubled ahead of the season coming closer to an end, traders said. Season for mango usually comes to an end by mid-June.

In Vashi, mango arrivals on Friday were estimated at 150,000-200,000 boxes (1 box = 12-15 kg), up from 75,000100,000 boxes a week ago, said Mobin Bhai, the owner of Maharashtra Sangam Fruit Company at the APMC, told Cogencis.

Prices of the fruit fell to 4060 rupees per kg, depending on its quality, compared with 100-150 rupees a week ago, traders said.

Mango prices have halved as arrivals from Devagad in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Bangalore have hit the Vashi wholesale market, said Salman Shaik, the owner of Aslam Bhai & Co. Devagad is a major supplier of popular alphonso mango.

Arrivals of the fruit surged as farmers have offloaded more of their produce ahead of the season coming to an end, said an official at the market.

There were reports of some mango growing regions receiving slight rains, after which farmers started plucking the fruit to avoid damages, said Ulhas Mulye, a Ratnagiri-based mango trader.

Prices of the fruit fell to Rs 40-60 per kg, depending on its quality, compared with Rs 100-150 a week ago.
