Tatas, Mahindra firms sign an MoU for electric vehicles

Maharashtra government signs Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with two big players Tatas and Mahindra, on the same day. This is, in lines with the government’s plan to further boost its electric vehicles (EVs) target.

In case of Tatas, Tata Power and Tata Motors Limited will be supporting Maharashtra government’s vision to promote e-mobility in the state. While Tata Motors will manufacture electric vehicles, Tata Power will have EV charging stations for these cars and any other EVs. At present, EV charging stations have come up in nine locations like Matunga, BKC, Bhandup (near LBS Marg), Chembur, Malad (near Link Road) and Carnac Bundar (near Fort and Freeway). More six are expected to come up soon.

Praveer Sinha, CEO and MD, Tata Power, said, “We will expand to other cities in the state with EV charging stations. This will happen soon.” He also added that the charging stations will be new stations and will not depend on the existing infrastructure of petrol pumps. At present, it would be charging points and later they will add other infrastructure as and when it requires.

In case of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), it signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of Maharashtra (GoM), to further its next phase of expansion in EVs. The joint declarations have been signed to further the Government’s vision to make Maharashtra a globally competitive state for EVs and component manufacture and to maximise the adoption of EVs in the state. M&M will further invest an additional amount of Rs 500 crore.

The second MoU will enable Mahindra to deploy EVs across key cities in Maharashtra. Both the company and the government will work closely with various fleet partners, taxi aggregators, logistics companies, amongst others to deploy 1,000 electric cars over the next one year.
