BMC to work on pipelines in the city throughout the monsoon
Apart from flooding and potholes, Mumbaikars have one more reason to worry, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to continue work on water pipelines. This work will be undertaken across the city in view of its 24hour water supply project, which has been delayed. This will entail working during the entire monsoon period, which will add to the woes of the citizens.
Areas where major pipeline work will be carried out include Bandra, Santacruz, Khar, and Mulund. The civic body has passed several deadlines and is pushing to complete its water distribution and improvement project in Bandra(H/West) and Mulund ward (T) since 2014. According to BMC special engineering department, the project is now expected to be completed around August 15. Sharad Ughade, assistant municipal commissioner (H/W), said, “The project will benefit a lot of people. Under it, the BMC plans to offer around 10 services, including quality assurance, leak detection in pipes, geographic information system (GIS) mapping for network and many others."
The civic body is yet to build chambers and install pressure valves in water pipes which will ensure uninterrupted water supply through the day. For this, it has dug up portions of major roads in the two suburban areas, the work on which will go on over the next few months. The work for the said project is underway at St Martin Road, Hill Road, S V Road, Juhu Circle and General Arunkumar Vaidya Marg in the western suburbs and Veena Nagar, Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg, Bal Rajeshwar Road and Navghar Road in the eastern suburbs.
A senior engineering official said, “We will try to finish the construction of chambers before June 30. The work may inconvenience citizens, but we will do it during the dry spell under supervision. We are also prepared to tackle water-logging in the areas.”
