Humiliated husband kills woman, attempts suicide

- STAFF REPORTER

A 45-year-old man has been booked by the Pant Nagar police at Ghatkopar for murdering his 40-year-old wife on Thursday. The accused murdered his wife after a fight broke out between them as she had insulted him in front of their relatives for not earning enough. After killing his wife, the man attempted to kill himself.

The accused, Shiv Shankar Vishwakarma, 45, murdered his wife Chandrakala, 40, at their residence in Ghatkopar’s Ramabai Colony. Shiv Shankar did odd jobs for a living, while Chandrakala was a tailor.

The couple and their two children, a 17-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter, had visited their native place Solapur, a fortnight ago, where relatives had advised Shiv Shankar to refrain from quarrelling with his wife and to earn a decent living. But Shiv Shankar felt insulted, police said. On Thursday night, a fight broke out between the couple on the subject and in a fit of rage, Shiv Shankar picked up a knife and slit her neck.

After this, he stabbed himself in the stomach with the same knife. Their children, who were present at home, witnessed the horrific crime. They called their maternal aunt Shashikala, who lives in Ulhasnagar, and narrated the incident to her. After Shashikala arrived, Chandrakala and Shiv Shankar were rushed to to Rajawadi hospital at Ghatkopar, where she was declared dead on arrival. Shiv Shankar is presently being treated for stomach injuries and his condition is said to be stable.

Rohini Kale, Senior Police Inspector, Pant Nagar police station, said, “We have booked Shiv Shankar for murder. He will be arrested as soon as he is discharged from the hospital.”
