Rhythm of Nostalgia
WHAT: ‘Rhythm of
Nostalgia’, a solo show of sculpture by renowned sculptor
Mrinal Kanti Gayen.
Born to the family of a teacher in the remote village of Kashiabad in
Sundarban, West
Bengal, Mrinal kanti
Gayen spent his childhood and youth experiencing the gifts of nature — its beauty and adversity, its benevolent and fearful forms, its blessings and thoughtless wrath. As a child, Mrinal would translate his varied perceptions of nature in the form of pictorial imaginations drawn upon the walls of his house or the banks of the river. Having passed his higher secondary examination, Mrinal realised that formal training was required in order to become an artist. Consequently he moved to
Kolkata to procure admission in the Government College of Art and Craft, for which he needed to pass an entrance exam. In order to attain his goal, Mrinal began delivering tuition in Kolkata and took lessons in art from Subhas Pal and other seniors at the college gate. With their assistance and training, he cleared the entrance test at the first chance and opted for ‘modelling and sculpture’ for his graduation. He later post-graduated from the same College. Presently, he teaches there as an Assistant Professor.
