Mumbai witnesses pre-monsoon showers, two people electrocut­ed

At least two persons were electrocut­ed to death in Bhandup after several parts of Mumbai witnessed heavy pre-monsoon showers, accompanie­d by strong winds and lightning.

Anil Yadav, 33, and Sara Yunus Shaikh, 9 (name changed), died from electric shock as they were passing by Khindi Pada in Bhandup West on late Saturday evening. They were rushed to MT Agarwal hospital in Mulund where they were declared dead on arrival. The bodies have been sent to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar for postmortem.

On Saturday evening heavy downpour started from the outskirts of Thane like Badlapur, Dombivli, and Kalyan and within a while reached parts of Thane, Mira Road and also parts of Mumbai like Mulund, Powai, and Borivali.

By around 8 pm several parts of the city in eastern as well as western suburbs began receiving rains with gusty winds and thundersto­rms. Rains were being reported from areas like Dahisar, Borivali, Kandivali, Powai, and parts of Andheri.

Pre-monsoon showers were earlier experience­d in some parts of Mumbai, Thane and Raigad in the morning. It rained heavily in Thane and more rain is expected in this region till Alibaug. Due to heavy rains and gusty winds the feeder supplying power has been shut as a precaution­ary measure, leaving parts of Kalyan, Ulhasnagar, Shahpur, Murbad, Dombivali, Titwala, Ambernath and surroundin­g areas in the dark. We may have to continue doing rotational load-shedding in few of our areas till normalcy is restored in the grid so as to reduce discomfort to our consumers as far as possible.”

Railway commuters, too, had to face problems during peak hours as the suburban services were affected due to rainfall and thundersto­rms which led to and even cancellati­on delay in trains.
