After stress of exams & results, admissions taking toll on students

- RONALD RODRIGUES

Where to apply? Which course? Which stream? Which college? Students are bombarded with these questions as they are in a dilemma about their future course of action. Though declaration of results relieved one big tension of students admission process is adding to another choas with multiple choices, wide range of subjects and an extensive arena of colleges and institutes.

Recently, students of various boards received their Class 12 and Class 10 results with just the results of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board examination pending to be announced. A wait of anxiety was over when the results were announced as the constant stress and impatience was ended for once. But declaration of results paved the way for another hurdle called ‘Admissions’.

With colleges starting their academic year from June, students need to pull up their socks and figure out their career choices. Students got to realise there are mutiple options and they should research about all these options before selecting their stream of learning. Vidya Pari, a teacher said, "It's more than just Engineering, Medical, Chartered Accountant (CA), Literature or Pyschology for students of Science, Commerce and Arts respectively. There are large number of Undergraduate (UG) courses which students can pursue in degree college."

Some courses are not even heard of by students. Lalit Srivastav, a senior professor said, "Courses like Ethical Hacking, Puppetry, Tea Tasting and Bachelor of Rural Studies are some offbeat new courses which are offered by various universities, institutes and colleges. Students, parents and even teachers are often unaware about these courses and therefore settle for the usual ones. Students can research about these courses and they might just find their next best interest."

Research, questioning, investigating and understanding various courses will help students to make a decision. Michael Pinto, a student said, "I want to pursue music but I do not know if any college or university is offering a particular course of this kind. Many of my friends desire to take up different courses which are not that well-known and it is good to see a shift of perspective."

While, Sadiya Mumtaz, a student said, "There are so many courses that often we are so confused and cannot zero down on one particular stream. I have scored good marks in HSC so I am trying my options and will apply for multiple choices. Till Class 12, it is a narrow stream of learning that we go through but in degree college we can expand our horizon and experiment."

Education experts claimed degree college helps students to groom themselves for the challenges of the real world. A principal of a college said, "Once students complete degree college they have to take up several jobs. Some of them might even opt to study further. But degree college lays the foundation as students have to face several challenges where they have to apply and use various aspects which they have learned. Students should opt for courses which interest them so that they are willing to work and continue in the same field once their college is over."
