GRAND JUMLA?
The Congress on Tuesday ridiculed Prime Minister Modi for promising two crore houses to the urban poor by 2022 under "Housing for all" programme.
Pointing out that under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) the Modi government has built only 3.33 lakh houses by Jan 2018, Congress chief spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted: "It will take your Govt, 240 years to build promised 2 Cr houses. You have completed a pittance 3% of the target."
"Housing for all in cities has become a 'Grand Jumla'!," he added.
A BJP leader, however, said it may be a 'jumla' for Surjewala but think of the smile that it brought to any of the thousands actually getting own roof.
On the very day Surjewala made fun of the housing scheme, Prime Minister Modi took to video-conferencing to interact with the beneficiaries of his Awas Yojana, telling them that the government is working to ensure every Indian has a home by 2022 when India celebrates its 75 years of independence.
The government plans to build around 3 crore houses in rural areas and one crore in urban areas, the PM said, pointing out that his government has given sanctions to build more than 47 lakh houses in urban areas, four times more than those given by the previous Congress-led UPA government in 10 years.
In a Parliament reply, the government reported 2506 beneficiaries in the first year in 2014-15, 18,706 in 2015-16, 66,985 in 2016-17 and 2,45,422 in 2017-18 (till Jan 2018).

He pointed out that the other two BJP-ruled states have no better record. Till October 2017, Madhya Pradesh refused 'pattas' (ownership papers) to 59% and Chhattisgarh 52%. Overall, 44% tribals did not get the forest land under the Forest Rights Act.
