- STAFF REPORTER

In order to bring awareness regarding safety at railway level crossings among the public, Western Railway observes safety awareness week from June 1 to 7, to mark the International Level Crossing (LC) Awareness Day on June 7, at all six divisions to educate people about the dangers of crossing unmanned railway level crossings without caution.

For the safety of railway passengers as well as road users, it is necessary for road vehicles to always stop before a railway crossing and watch carefully for the incoming train from either sides and then cross the railway level crossing safely.

According to Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, India is a member country of ‘International Union of Railways’ which is celebrating June 7 as ‘International Level Crossing Awareness Day.’

Release says, “Accidents can be avoided by “3 Es” viz Education, Engineering and Enforcement. In order to spread awareness a campaign will be conducted among school, college students and panchayats.”

There will also be a campaign to target the road users and will be conducted at various unmanned railway level crossings, where the vehicle drivers will be made aware of the necessary precautions required to be taken before crossing an unmanned railway gate.

In addition to this, the railway officials will publish awareness advertisements in leading local and other language news papers. Similarly, caps, coasters, steering wheel stickers, pencil stand, paper scales, posters and LC Awareness slogans will be distributed to Schools.

Special checks/safety drives at level crossings will also be conducted. Indian Railways has decided to man all LC gates to reduce accidents at Level Crossing gates. All Unmanned Level Crossings over Western Railway are planned to be eliminated by March 31, 2019.
