- STAFF REPORTER

A 22-year-old girl who was riding pillion was killed in an accident after a tanker hit the bike at Thane on Saturday afternoon. The bike then skidded over a pothole, which was not visible due to the heavy rains on Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred at 12:30 pm at Nagla Bunder at Kasarvadavli. Priyanka Zende (22) was riding pillion while her friend Tanvi Golande (23) was riding the bike when a tanker hit the bike from the right side. Due to the collision, Tanvi and Priyanka lost control and fell off the bike. The duo had visited Gaimukh area to enjoy the rains at 11 am. When it began to rain heavily, the two friends decided to return home when the accident occurred.

Priyanka was rushed to Thane civil hospital but succumbed to head injuries and was declared dead on arrival. After the accident, the unknown tanker driver fled away from the spot. According to police, although there are CCTV cameras in the area, the accident was not captured owing to low visibility due to heavy rains. According to SS Dhole, Senior Police Inspector, Kasarvadwali police, “Since the accident has not been captured on the CCTV cameras due to low visibility, we do not even have the registration number of the tanker which hit the bike. It is difficult to conduct further investigation to trace the accused.” Priyanka is a

resident of Lokmanya Nagar at Thane. Tanvi sustained minor injuries on her hands and legs and is presently undergoing treatment at Thane civil hospital. SS Dhole, Senior Police Inspector, Kasarvadavli police, said, “We have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an unknown driver. He has been booked for negligence.”
