PhD degree is being made mandatory for direct recruitment in universities as assistant professors and promotion in colleges to the post with effect from July 1 under the new University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations unveiled by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar as an exercise to attract and retain the best quality of teachers in the higher education field.

However, Masters degree with NET or PhD. will continue to be the minimum eligibility requirement for direct recruitment to the post of assistant professors in colleges.
