In bid to identify him, GRP allows video of man committing suicide in front of train to go viral

Nearly six days after a 35-year-old man committed suicide by jumping in front of a local train, the government railway police (GRP) on Monday released a video clip that had captured the entire incident. This move came after the GRP failed to trace his family members.

"The identity of the body is still to be ascertained as we have not found any clue from his personal belongings. The video going viral may help us reach his family members,” said a GRP official.

The incident took place at Malad station at 8.30am. According to the closed circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident, the man descended from the railway bridge and began walking along the platform. “As soon as he saw the train approaching, he jumped in front of it. The speeding train, which had no halt at Malad, was going towards Churchgate station,” said an official.

A senior railway official said the GRP is investigating the case as they are still to establish the motive behind the suicide.

Statistics show that 1,342 people have died in 2018, of which 144 were women and 1,197 are male. Until now only 921 people have been identified, while 421 are still unidentified. In 2017, 33 people had committed suicide on railway tracks, while the corresponding figures for 2016, 2015 and 2014 are 40, 32 and 33 respectively.
