Know Yourself And Everything Will Work Well

- — T.G. L. Iyer

Highly productive people have a great sense of balance and harmony in their lives. They are thoroughly familiar with the drumbeat of marching steps and know when to retreat and clear their heads of concerns and cobwebs. To avoid being consumed by anxiety or worry, they walk away from chaos and complications.

In the process of walking away, they begin to see their tasks with clarity and transparency. Leaving a fixed point and then glancing back at it does indeed cause the point to appear smaller. From a distance they can appraise the point better with one swift glance.

Why do painters stand back and look at the painting they have created from a distance? In this process any flaw or weakness can be spotted quickly.

Another way to do this in today’s world is to think silently by shutting off voices. Or it can be done by meditating on what the job is going to be before you undertake it, be it any serious pursuit like conducting a business meeting, going for a job interview, giving a lecture or painting a portrait.

In the process of keeping more distance between yourself and your work and relaxing into vacant space, you are inviting intervention into your activity. The less stress you place on yourself to accomplish a task, the more power you gain to do just that.

When you are detached from the outcome, you are allowing the outcome to take care of itself. For example, when you attend a music concert, your purpose is not to get into the end of music but to enjoy each moment of the concert.

Think of eating a banana? Is the purpose to get from one end to another? No, you want to enjoy each bite.

When you consider what you love to accomplish in your life but feel ill prepared to bring it about, think of Sir Edward Dyer (1543-1607), the English poet of the Elizabethan period, who wrote the lyrics, ‘My mind to me a kingdom is’, in which he talks of mind control to eliminate selfdestructive behaviour.

Remind yourself that no one can make you happy or unhappy without your consent. Remember that you are the sum total of the choices you make in your mind. Your mind is your kingdom; you are the king or your inner domain.
