HOW MUCH MORE RAIN PAIN CAN MUMBAIKARS BEAR?

City transport badly hit, WR worst affected with services delayed by 25-30 minutes

- STAFF REPORTER

The city's rail transport was badly hit after continuous heavy rains lashed the city for over 24 hours. However, despite the waterlogging on railway tracks on Monday, suburban services on all the four lines -- Central, Western, Harbour and trans-Harbour -were operational, though late by 45-50 minutes. Around 100 services were cancelled. Traffic snarls were reported in different parts of the city and several areas remained waterlogged.

WR trains were delayed by 25 minutes, harbour line trains by 10 minutes and CR by 20 minutes. Tracks were flooded at Kurla, Sion, Wadala, Thane and Kalwa, leading to delay in train services. Only two of the six airconditioned local train services were operated on Monday.

Four separate incidents were reported on the suburban service sections. A technical snag was reported at Dadar station, due to which slow locals on CR were lined up one behind the other. A retaining wall at Sandhurst Road collapsed and the debris was removed later.

Ravinder Bhakar, CPRO, WR, said around 50 services were cancelled and 100 train services were delayed. On CR, around 37 services were cancelled.

On the western line, Nalasopara was worst-hit. WR tweeted, "Due to very heavy rains since last night, water on tracks at Nallasopara. Traffic on UP fast line stopped as water reached 180 mm above rail level. Trains running on other 3 lines at Nallasopara on restricted speed. #WRUpdates @drmbct."

“Due to water over 180 mm on Up fast line at Nallasopara, traffic stopped on it, hence there is delay of about 15 mins in suburban trains. Other 3 lines at Nallasopara working with trains running on restricted speed #WRUpdates @drmbct,” tweeted WR.

A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) spokesperson said buses were slightly delayed, but no service was cancelled or suspended.

Advisories were constantly issued by the traffic department through their official Twitter account, in order to help office-goers reach their destination on time. In the early hours on Monday, police officials issued alerts on heavy traffic congestion on the Malad and Andheri subways.
