Nuclear power, propelling growth of the nation
Electricity is a significant and strategic input for any economy. Clean and green power generation is necessary not only for the nation but also for the entire world in order to sustain life. India has announced a target of achieving 175 GW of renewable energy by the year 2022. India plans to add 100 GW of solar power generation capacity, while wind power could contribute to the tune of 60 GW. Another 10 GW could come from biomass and 5 GW from hydroelectricity (new dams). It would be worth mentioning here solar and wind require too much land. Solar power is not available during night time and on cloudy days. And wind does not blow all the time. Moreover, these sources are not suitable for heavy or industrial use presently or 24x7 grid-connectable power. Another important clean source of electricity generation is nuclear power. It is a safe, cost-effective and proven emissions-free energy option. With the commercial operation of Kudankulam unit-1 and unit-2, there are now 22 nuclear power plants in the country, with the installed capacity of 6,780 megawatts. India’s nuclear power programme enjoys an enviable reputation worldwide. Functioning of all nuclear power plants in India has been accident-free. Clean power generation, such as nuclear power, along with other clean sources is a sure way to combat climate change. It is a safe, time-tested option. Nuclear power has been providing environment-friendly electricity on a commercial scale at stable, competitive prices since the last six decades globally. Carbon-free electricity generation is not only desirable for a clean, healthy environment for people, but also for the longterm health of the planet itself.
