Smart meters to end electricity bills

NEW DELHI: The Centre is pushing for smart electricity meters that will put an end to delivery of the electricity bills to the consumer.

Minister of State for Power RK Singh hailed it as a revolutionary step to have the smart meters in all premises. “In next three years metering will go smart prepaid, and gone will be the days of bills reaching your house. So need of the hour is to scale up manufacturing of smart prepaid meters and to bring down their prices,” the minister said during an interaction with the smart meter manufacturers, asking the power ministry officials to make these meters mandatory after a particular date. The minister said the government’s plan to fast introduce smart meters throughout the country will reduce power companies’ losses and ease bill payments,
