-

A law college for children of serving and retired Army personnel has come up near here in Maharashtra.

The Army Law College, a residential institute offering five-year BBA-LLB course, was on Monday inaugurated by Lieutenant General D R Soni, General Officer Commanding-in-chief, Southern Command, at Kanhe, 45km from here.

Children of serving and retired Army personnel are being given admission in the college from the current academic year, Soni told reporters on the sidelines of the event.

In the future, the Army will consider giving admission to children of civilians as well, he said. The college, affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), is being run under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES).

The college, set up on a piece of land gifted by the Radha Kaliandas Daryanani Charitable Trust, aims to prepare students to pursue a career at bar, in judicial services, Armed Forces Civil Services, corporate houses and other organisations of repute.

“The Army is overwhelmed by the generosity shown by the Radha Kaliandas Daryanani Charitable Trust, whose chairman Prem Daryanani and others members gifted the property,” he said. “Government officials from various departments of the state were very supportive as they cut down the time of bureaucratic procedures.

“These efforts by our Army officials and various authorities of the state government can be termed as an exercise in nation-building,” he added.

“(By donating land) we wanted to set an example for

other civilians that our sentiments are with the armed forces and we are supporting you, both in war and peace time,” said Daryanani on the occasion. The fully residential college for boys and girls is being developed in three phases.

It aims at providing stateofthe art infrastructure for students, including smart classrooms, Wi-Fi zone and various sports facilities, among others.
