Third merit list out; over 58,000 students get seats

The state education department declared the third merit list for the first year junior colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region(MMR) on its official website on Tuesday; of the 1,17,234 students who had applied in various streams, 50 per cent have been allotted admissions.

According to the third merit list, the cut-off percentage for Science in Vaze-Kelkar College, Mulund, is 96.8, while for Commerce, it is 90.3 and for Arts, it is 88 per cent. In Jai Hind College, Churchgate, the cut-off for Science is 87 per cent while for Commerce, it is 90.6 per cent and for Arts, it is 92 per cent; the cut-off for Science in K C College, Churchgate, is 87.2 per cent, while for Commerce, it is 90.5 per cent and for Arts, it is 89.4 per cent.

An official from a reputed junior college told The Free Press Journal, on condition of anonymity, “Our college has been allotted 108 students and if you will compare any merit list, the drop is generally 2-4 per cent for 100 students but this time there is a drop of nine per cent — where the starting cut-off is from 98.3 per cent it’s ending at 88.23 per cent, due to which students with good scores, who want to study in our college will not take admission in our college.”

Meanwhile, students claim some reputed colleges have sought donations for admission and although they have gone to the nearest police station to complain, police officers are taking a lot of time to file a complaint against these colleges.
