Where will they go?

A number (of names) almost equivalent to World Cup football runners-up Croatia’s population (41,64,783 as on 2016) didn't figure on the list (40,007,707 applicants) of the complete draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam (July 31). Assam NRC was initiated by the UPA II in September 2013 to fulfil the commitment made in the Assam Accord of 1985, and the five-year exercise of the complete draft at a cost of Rs1,220 crore. Home Minister Rajnath Singh assured there was no need to panic as ample opportunit­y would be provided to file grievances and urged everyone not to indulge in dirty politics over the issue. But this is India, where everything is weighed down by politics. Hence, after the release of the list, though there is an uneasy calm over missing names, vote bank politics has begun. Mamata Banerjee has declared: Indians made refugees inn own land. While Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh has said: "If we (BJP) are voted to power in Bengal, then we too will implement the NRC in the state. We will send back the illegal immigrants to Bangladesh”. For the sake of the country, one must not create a biased opinion about this whole exercise, by calling for the deportatio­n of 40 lakh people because under this draft, thousands of genuine citizens' names have also been excluded for one reason or the other.
