Anushka: Permanent Team India fixture
Virat Kohli's wife Anushka Sharma is going places. Even though she has never held a cricket bat, she has landed in the august company of Team India – in the official BCCI picture that also features the support staff and officials of the Indian High Commission in London.
And it is not just a guest appearance in the back rows, for she is right up front, rubbing shoulders with husband and team India captain Virat Kohli.
Her presence immediately drew flak on twitter with denizens of cyber space pointing out that it is not the same thing as travelling on board a team India
bus or leisurely ambling into the dressing room.
Anushka is not only privileged
in being allowed to accompany her partner on the tour, she seems to be the only one whom the BCCI is bending backwards to oblige. No other wife seems to enjoy such a hallowed status. The irony is that in the snap majority of Kohli’s teammates are standing behind Anushka.
Strictly as per rules, the wives and girlfriends can join the cricket players only for 14 days after the first two weeks of a 45-day tour. According to media reports, the cricketers' wives, including Anushka, Sakshi Dhoni, Ritika Sajdeh (Rohit Sharma's wife), Ayesha Mukherjee (Shikhar Dhawan's spouse) and others were present throughout the limited-overs series between India and England in July. But only Anushka has stayed back.
