A big THANKS to defence personnel

'THANKS', read the simple message in huge font in white paint on the terrace of a home, encapsulat­ing sentiments of grateful Keralites rescued by defence personnel after raging floods left them marooned. This note on the mossy roof of a two storeyed building at Paravoor near Kochi can be read by personnel from helicopter­s engaged in rescue operations. Incidental­ly, this was the very same house from which two women were dramatical­ly winched up to safety by a brave Navy commando when torrential rains lashed Kerala three days ago.

TN 9-year-old’s noble gesture

The gesture of a nine year-old girl from a town in Tamil Nadu to part with her savings of four years meant for a bicylce, for Kerala flood relief has moved a premier cycle manufactur­er, who has now promised to gift her ‘one cycle every year of her life’. Anupriya from Villupuram in the state has decided to give away about Rs 9000 of her savings, done over the last four years, after coming across TV visuals of the deluge in Kerala. Hero Cycles, in it official Twitter account, appreciate­d her “gesture to support humanity” and said she would get a brand new cycle from them. "I had saved money (of around Rs 8000) for over four years to buy a cycle. But I saw visuals of Kerala flood on television­s and decided to give the money," toward relief activities, she told reporters here.

Tipper lorries turn saviours

Speeding tipper lorries carrying granite stones and sand were a dreaded sight for any pedestrian in Kerala, yet in the large flooded areas of the state, these are the vehicles which people look for transport as well as for bringing the muchneeded relief material. In floodravag­ed Pathanamth­itta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts these lorries have ferried hundreds of people to safer areas, facilitati­ng distributi­on of ration and dailyuse essential commoditie­s.

Fishermen refuse `3k for saving lives

A leader of fishermen, who have won widespread praise by rescuing hundreds caught up in the Kerala floods, on Monday refused to accept Rs 3,000 offered to each member of the community by CM Pinarayi Vijayan. Khais Mohammed from Fort Kochi said in a video post that he and his colleagues were happy to hear the words of praise from CM for the role they played.
