- NARENDRA GUPTA/Thane

Two children of the Gharat family were killed after they fell into a pothole on Mumbai’s Nashik highway on Sunday night at around 9.45 pm on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. The mishap highlights Thane district’s callousness towards the upkeep of its roads.

The two children died and their father and mother sustained injuries after a heavily loaded truck rammed into them on the highway, after they fell off their bike.

The deceased have been identified as Sachin (10) and Kamini (15). Both died on the spot while their father Prakash and mother Rekha sustained serious injuries and are being treated at the Shahapur Primary Health Hospital.

The Gharat family is resident of Aaware village in Shahapur.

On Sunday, Prakash, his wife and the two kids were headed for his brother-in-law’s house at Asangaon village to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. According to the Shahapur police, their bike fell on the road and while the children fell on the left side, the parents fell on the right and the two kids were mowed down by the truck, which was coming from behind. After the accident, the truck driver fled from the spot.

The Shahapur police registered a case against an unknown truck driver under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code and Motor Vehicles Act. The mishap reportedly happened while the vehicle was negotiating a manhole.

Police Sub Inspector Nilesh Kadam of the Shahapur police station said, “The accident happened due to a pothole. We have got information about the truck driver and will nab him soon."
