Bellasis Road revamp to begin from Oct
MUMBAI: The Bellasis Road at Byculla, will be spruced up into a model road. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) roads department has undertaken this project and the work is expected to begin from October. Rais Shaikh, the local corporator of the ward and the man driving this idea said, some work had already begun prior to the monsoon. “For the first time in Mumbai, such a road is being constructed which will have proper signboards, pathways for pedestrians, zebra crossings and footpaths which will be encroachment-free. The idea is to provide sufficient place for walking and make the entire road traffic free,” said Shaikh. The civic body claims it has not constructed such a road in Mumbai till now. The Bellasis revamp project will be the first model road in Mumbai city designed to provide relief from traffic jams, illegal parking and make footpaths free of encroachments. The BMC has also appointed the World Resources Institute (WRI) India to conduct road safety inspection and submitted a report along with design recommendations for the 823-metre stretch of Lamington Road-Bellasis Road-Nagpada, said the civic officer from roads department. The road has a busy congested junction, Nagpada with five roads intersecting at one point. There are a lot of hawkers and often it is difficult to move around in this area. The revamp design has also allocated spaced for a podium to hoist the national flag and additional space for parking vehicles. - Staff Reporter
