Vaghela vows to work for non-BJP parties

- R K MISRA

The eternal rebel of Gujarat politics, Shankersinh Vaghela has suo moto decided to work for a collaborative of non-BJP parties that would work for the ouster of the Narendra Modi government and a result oriented, stable government to replace it after the 2019 general elections.

Vaghela announced this on Tuesday after a meeting of his supporters even as a truncated two-day session of the Vidhan Sabha began here today with over 200 Congressmen courting arrest after a rally in the state capital demanding farm loan waiver.

Vaghela, who had almost engineered the defeat of Congress veteran leader Ahmed Patel in the Rajya Sabha elections and put up candidates to fight the Gujarat Assembly elections on a regional party platform to the benefit of the BJP, seemed to have done a summersault again with his decision to work for the 'mahagathbandhan'.

“Some of the BJP elders whom I met also favoured a united front to defeat the BJP,” he added.

Vaghela said that there was need to band the opposition together to provide an alternative to the BJP before the people. “A third front which does not take the principal national entity, the Congress into reckoning would only divide the anti-BJP votes and contribute to the saffron party's victory,” he added.

Vaghela vehemently denied that he was looking to join the NCP after ditching the Congress and with the BJP cold shouldering him.
