Water is one of the most important substances on our planet and an important source of human existence. The flowing nature of water proves as a strong and powerful medium for transference of energy. Water belongs to a very important elemental category among the Panchmahabhuta or the five basic elements of Vastu and Feng Shui. Most cultures across the world respect water. Clean water within your premises, in a properly designated location, channelises the flow of energy into the premises, while dirty water, whether it is stagnant or flowing, on your premises has negative impact. If we study houses which were built in ancient times, one thing we notice is that the bathroom, especially toilets, were mostly built outside or detached from the main structure of the house. Isn’t it strange? Why was this? Well, there is a reason behind this. Bathroom and toilet is a place where dirty water is drained out from the premises. It is a place where we cleanse and purify ourselves. As we know that water is a very important source of the energy, dirty water should, thus, be separated from the main house, to avoid leakage of energy flow from the house. This structural aspect of old homes has worked very well, hygienically and energetically, in ancient times. Since Vastu and Feng Shui have been in existence since ancient times, people had adapted the principle by default.

But, implementing this is almost impossible in modern homes where availability of space of very limited. Bathroom and toilets are part of the main house as opposed to ancient homes where they were outside of the main house. For convenience and luxury, in today’s time, bathrooms / toilets are not only inside the house, but are also attached the bedrooms and in many houses they are right in front of the bed. Imagine how much energy loss must be taking place from the house you stay in. But, worry not! There are easy and practical ways for balancing the energy flow in such cases. Bathrooms and its internal layout should be correctly done considering the detailed principles of Vastu and Feng Shui. Many people read and hear a lot about bathrooms and its negative impact on occupants when bathrooms and toilets are located in incorrect zone of the house. Most commonly discussed is when the bathroom or toilet is situated in the north-east or south-west it is considered very negative. It is possible to avoid constructing a toilet in north-east or south-west when you are constructing your own home, office or factory. However, this is impractical in an apartment due to various challenges the architects face while designing the layout. If you are already occupying the premises and if the bathroom is situated in an incorrect zone, breaking and shifting it is very difficult due to many restrictions.

Does this thumb rule of avoiding the bathroom in north-east or south-west apply for everyone? If you see the layout of an apartment, it is generally the same for all the floors that are below or above in that line. Now assume the bathroom or toilet is situated in south-west corner of the apartment as per the layout, thus, all the apartments in that line of the building will have their bathrooms in southwest zone. But, are all residents affected by the negative impact of their south-west bathroom or toilet? There are few families who are prospering and few who are facing problems. So what causes this difference in situations of the families, even though all of the apartments have bathrooms or toilet in the same south-west zone? Date of birth of the occupants play an important role in Vastu and Feng Shui to understand favourable and unfavourable directions. Just going by thumb rules one cannot say that bathroom in north-east or south-west is good or bad. Detailed calculations are essential to analyse the impact of the energy flow into the premises. There are a few general guidelines which one need to follow to minimise the impact of energy leakage from the bathroom or toilet in the house.

If you are constructing a new bathroom in your premises, be it commercial or residential premises, avoid constructing them in extreme corners of your premises irrespective of its direction. Energy generally gathers in the corners, thus avoid energy drains by having bathroom in the corners.
