SRA begins biometric survey of 1.8L Thane slums
The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has started the biometric survey in Thane region following Mumbai. As per the SRA data, Thane has 1.80 lakh hutments, of which, biometrics of only 5,000 families is completed till now. Mahaonline, a state government agency, is conducting the survey for SRA.
An SRA official stated even though biometric survey contract for Thane region was awarded to the agency in January this year, the ground survey began only in August. “We managed to cover only a few thousand families’ biometric survey till now, as the survey began in August,” said the official.
As per the SRA data, Mumbra, Chendani, Pachpakadi, Naupada, Majiwade, Parsik are areas in Thane with densely scattered slums. Of these, Mumbra has 45% of the slums. slum clusters with 40,000 hutments each. SRA is conducting the biometric surveys across the city and suburbs, both on central and western side. Biometrics in many areas have already started and it’s now the turn of in Thane and Mumbra.
Mumbai has huge slum clusters, with prime area, Colaba, which ranks first with 477 number of slum clusters, subsequently Borivali-II has 288, Bhandup has 200, Bandra-II 199, Andheri-II 192 number of slum clusters. As per the information available with SRA, Mumbai has around nine lakh hutments of which only 2.5 lakh families have been surveyed using the biometric method until October 3, 2018.
The biometric survey was first started in Mumbai in 2016. The official added biometric survey is done to ascertain the occupants on a particular piece of land. As per the Maharashtra State Government Slum Rehabilitation Act, slum dwellers who have residential proof of 2000 and prior, are considered eligible for the slum rehabilitation project.
