Paedophile named in 2010 Nehru Nagar rape & murder of 9-yr-old
Serial rapist and paedophile Rehan Qureshi, 34, has been named as one of the accused in the 2010 Nehru Nagar rape and murder case of a nine-year-old girl.
Qureshi, arrested by Navi Mumbai police on September 26 for allegedly raping 18 girls across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, revealed his involvement in the Nehru Nagar rape case during interrogation.
He said he had gone underground after the rape incidents to evade arrest.
According to sources, after Qureshi’s revelations, his DNA test was conducted, which matched with DNA samples of the nine-yearold girl. Her DNA samples were preserved in the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina. After confirming the development from the FSL, Nehru Nagar police named Qureshi as a prime suspect.
In 2010, Mumbai was rocked with three back to back cases of rape and murder of girls. In February, the body of a five-year-old girl was found in a drain in Nehru Nagar. In March, the body of a nine-year-old was found on the terrace of a police quarters building. In June, the body of an eight-year-old was recovered from a dilapidated building in the same area. In all the cases, the accused first raped and then, brutally murdered the girls.
In 2011, Nehru Nagar police arrested Javed Shaikh, a cable operator on eyewitnesses’ account. His DNA matched with that of the eight-year-old’s DNA. He was arrested for kidnapping, rape and murder.
After Shaikh’s arrest, Qureshi went underground to evade arrest and struck back after six years in 2016. In a span of 24 months, he raped and molested 18 girls.
Police added the accused confessed he didn’t remember the number of girls he raped to date. Cops believe serial rapist Qureshi is still hiding many of his crimes.
