In a major accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Wednesday morning, a tempo mowed down four workers painting white safety stripes on the road near Bor Ghat at Khopoli. While one worker succumbed to the injuries, four people, including the tempo driver, were admitted to the civic MGM hospital in Kamothe.

Traffic on the Mumbaibound road of MumbaiPune Expressway was hit badly due to the accident. There was a delay of over 20 minutes, with bumper-tobumper traffic during peak office hours.

According to police sources, the incident took place at 8.55 am on Wednesday, when the Mumbaibound tempo came speeding on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and hit the workers. While one worker was crushed to death, three others sustained serious injuries in the accident. The deceased was identified as Naresh Dadulal Manpole, 27, while the injured persons were Sunil Nandlal Kharwani, 28, Narendra Yuthoke, 26, and Uday Lal, 28.

Highway police said the tempo driver was driving rashly on the Expressway and when he saw the men at work on the road, he lost control of his vehicle, mowing them down and collided with another truck. Soon after the accident, IRB ambulance rushed the deceased and the injured to the civic-run MGM hospital in Kamothe, where they are being treated.

Khopoli Police have booked the tempo driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to rash driving (Section 279), causing death due to negligence (section 304A). The accused driver, who has sustained a head injury, is being treated at MGM hospital and is yet to be arrested.
