Man strangles wife at Bhandup

Suspected her of extramarit­al affair

A 22-year-old man strangulat­ed his 19-year-old wife to death at their residence at Bhandup on Wednesday morning since the accused suspected his wife of having an extramarit­al affair.

According to police, the accused, Amar Bapu Mahire alias Rahul (22), would often pick fight with wife Nisha Mahire (19) over the suspected affair. At 10 am on Wednesday, the couple had a fight over the same issue at their residence at Hanumant Nagar slum, Bhandup.

Amar abused Nisha in filthy language. Nisha pushed him aside to reach for the flat’s entrance door to regain her composure. Due to the push, a nylon rope of a clotheslin­e tied on a low ceiling wall, fell off. With the rope, he strangled her to death. Realising his wife was dead, he panicked and fled, said police.

The neighbours made a phone call to the police and informed them about the incident. Nisha was rushed to the nearby Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar where she was declared dead on arrival.

Ramesh Khade, senior inspector, Bhandup police station, said, “Amar surrendere­d before the Parksite police, Vikhroli, at 9.30 pm on Wednesday, since he thought his residence comes under the jurisdicti­on of Parksite police. He narrated the incident and confessed to having committed the crime. We took him into custody.”

Amar was produced at the Vikhroli court on Thursday afternoon. He was remanded in police custody until November 4.

Amar worked as a housekeepe­r while Nisha was a house-wife. The couple had married on February 20 this year, said police.
