MNS LEADER ATTACKED IN CHEMBUR, FOUR ARRESTED

- STAFF REPORTER /

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Karna Bala Dunbale was attacked with sharp weapons by 11 people on Saturday late evening. Dunbale was immediately rushed to the civic-run Sion Hospital where he is being treated for the injuries.

Chunabhatti police have arrested four persons in connection with this and more arrests are likely to be made. Police said the attack was provoked following a molestation case was filed against Dunbale by a woman at Chembur police station.

The arrest was made after Dunbale identified four of the attackers and given their names to the police. Chunabhatti police has registered a case against the accused persons under relevant sections of IPC.

According to police, the incident took place at around 8.30 pm on Saturday, when Dunbale had visited Sindhi society in Chembur, adjacent to his own residence. Out of nowhere, a group of 10-11 persons armed with iron rods and swords came at Dunbale and attacked him. The whole incident hardly lasted for a couple of minutes.

The accused ran away from the spot immediately after the attack. The locals and onlookers rushed Dunbale to the hospital. A police officer said they have registered a case of attempt to murder against the unidentified accused.

Shahaji Umap, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6) said, “The attackers have claimed that Dunbale had molested a woman last month, they were aggravated over the incident and attacked him to take revenge.”

The four accused were arrested hours after the attack and were produced in a holiday court on Sunday. The four accused have been sent to police custody till November 8.

The Chembur police have neither taken any action in the case registered against Dunbale nor have they called him for questioning. Following the police lathargy in the case, the accused persons planned an attack on Dunbale.

Commenting on Dunbale’s medical condition, a doctor from Sion Hospital said, “The patient has been given 22 stitches on his injuries. He has sustained several cut marks by sharp weapons, mostly on his upper body.”

Hours after the attack on Dunbale, MNS spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande visited him at the Sion Hospital, where Dunbale was admitted in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). According to Deshpande this attack was both politically motivated and had personal reasons as well.

He was later trasferred to Surana Sethia Hospital.
