There will be no winter this year

- SWAPNIL MISHRA

Mumbaikars hoping to don their jackets or shawls will be disappointed to know that winter will be skipping the city this year.

However, Mumbaikars are likely to get some respite from the hot weather, but not before the second week of December. So, as per the Met Department, there will be some dip in temperature but no winter.

"The winds from the north, which bring the cold wave into the city, are not blowing in the direction of Mumbai. The temperatures in northern India, too, have not plummeted and currently the winds are blowing east, due to which even the days are warm, explained KS Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of the Meteorological Department.

He further added there is no fixed date for winter as it is difficult to predict; it does not have a timeline like the monsoon.

Even in the second week of December, there may be only a slight dip in the day temperature. "Unless the temperature of the day decreases, the chances of getting relief from heat is less,’’ said Hosalikar.

On Tuesday, the maximum temperatures recorded at Santacruz and Colaba were 36 and 34 degrees Celsius, two to three degrees above normal.

However, nights have been perceptibly cool, with the minimum temperature being 21.2 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity stood at 60 per cent in Santacruz on Tuesday, much lower than Colaba’s 71 per cent, an occurrence causing nights to become cooler.
