Police sub-inspector (PSI) Sajan Sanap (37), who was attached to Amboli police station, allegedly committed suicide in Pune. Sources said Sanap was jumped in front of a Lonavala-bound train and died. Sanap was named in a rape case at Nashik upnagar (suburb) police station on Monday, which investigating officers feel may have prompted him to take the extreme step.

Sanap was staying in the city alone at the police quarters, while his family, mother, wife and two daughters, stayed in his hometown at Nashik. He would visit his family on his holidays. Accordingly, on Monday, which was his weekly off, Sanap had gone to meet his family in Nashik. After meeting his family, for reasons unknown, he went to Pune late evening.

Police said, on Tuesday, at around 9.30am, Sanap jumped in front of a Lonavala-bound train near Shivaji Nagar. The railway police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter.

A senior police inspector from Nashik upnagar police station said, the complainant, whose husband is a senior officer in Mumbai police force, had registered the case. The officer said, "After the case was registered, we informed Sanap about it late on Monday evening. The next day we were shocked to learn of his suicide. A police team from the police station was also sent to the spot."

Police are yet to ascertain the exact reason for his suicide and are investigating this matter. Meanwhile, Sanap's family members gathered outside upnagar police station on Tuesday afternoon and blamed the police for abetting his suicide.
