E-Awas to cut short cops’ waiting time for housing

- STAFF REPORTER

The Mumbai Police launched ‘e-Awas system’, an auto generated system for providing easier housing for the personnel working in the police force. The new system has been introduced on Sunday to bring transparency in the allotment of houses for the constables and other police officers. The system will reduce the time for allotment of houses provided to the police force by the government.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the system. Mumbai Commissioner of Police Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, school education minister Vinod Tawde and Amitabh Bachhan were also present in the event. Under the system, which will be operated by the Directorate of Estates under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, police personnel will be able to bid for vacant houses as per their location preference.

Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra said, “The new system would reduce the time that police personnel has to wait to get government accommodation in the city. The police officers have to register their names on the application and select the housing location as per their requirement which is made available through the bidding system. This will be a time saving process.”

At present, the Mumbai police has 24,000 houses for the constabulary and officers at 71 locations in the city including its headquarters at Worli, Naigaon and Marol. Every month, the applicants can review the status of their application. If they wish to make alterations in the location preference, they can change it on the system.

Subodh Jaiswal, the Commissioner of Police, Mumbai said, "A survey of housing was carried out. Through the e-Awas system, every police officer will know where does he stand in terms of getting a house. This will eliminate accusations of favouritism."

Every month a certain number of houses get vacant, as the occupants retire from the post. The allocations will be separate for the constabulary and officers as different types and sizes of houses have been built for both the ranks.

47 housing colonies for the police at Vile Parle and Santacruz were inaugurated on Sunday.
