Shiny hot pants, blingy jumpsuits, outlandish space-age costumes that could put Star Wars to shame — a fourmember Swedish pop band wasn’t just channelling ‘70s coolth, they were defining it. ABBA (an acronym of the band members’ names: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad) ruled the music charts. Platinum ABBA (now Platinum – The Live ABBA Tribute Show) had found a fan base. “We have been performing our show around the world for 21 years and been seen by millions of people during that period. But we still get excited every time we step out on stage... and this is important for us, as we believe that this is what will keep us going for the next 21 years!” says Andy Nye, the band’s founder, and ‘Benny’, when on stage.

Just a glimpse

ABBA’s records were instant favourites, their singles were being played around the globe, and their dressing and hairstyles were being copied. Indeed, they were to music and pop-culture of the ‘70s what The Beatles were to the ‘60s. They will be performing from the ballads like Chiquitita, Fernando and I Have a Dream to many of the upbeat hits like

Mamma Mia, Waterloo and Dancing Queen and rest is a surprise. “Firstly, the songs of ABBA are timeless and known around the world. That’s why the audiences love to sing and dance along with us. Secondly, the costumes always bring a smile to people’s faces, evoking the glamour and glitz of the 1970s and providing a spectacle to perfectly complement the fabulous music. And lastly and most importantly, we always perform every show as if it had to be the best one ever. We want every single member of the audience to go home at the end of the evening with a memory that will stay with them forever,” concludes Andy.

Watch ABBA at: TATA Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point on December 12 at 6.30 pm & 8.30 pm
