BMC to address traffic woes, launch management helpline
To deal with ever-increasing traffic problems arising from the abandoned vehicles on the roadsides, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will start toll free numbers, Email ID, and Whatsapp numbers services for the hassled citizens. The BMC moves comes on the High Court direction.
Notably, hundreds of new vehicles are registered every day in Mumbai, but there is limited parking space, leading to rising traffic issues such as traffic jams, chaos and parking along the pavement for pedestrians.
In view of rising troubles to general public, Mahesh Bedekar recently filed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging the road and traffic problem. The High Court directed the BMC to constitute a cell and provide toll free numbers, Whatsapp number and email ID for the public to register their complaints and rid the roads of the unclaimed vehicles parked along the roads.
In addition, the BMC has given a contract to MTLC Vehicles Assistance Private Ltd to work on such issues. The municipal contractor will be paid `4,80,000 yearly.
The BMC appointed MLTC without any tender, as the it needed immediate attention after the court order.
MTLC will provide customer service assistance to people and BMC. The cell, expected to start soon, will work from 8 am to 8 pm and the languages offered will be English, Hindi and Marathi. The cell will provide all information about the parking issues, besides traffic-related information.
