The minimum temperature in Pune city on Tuesday morning was 9 degrees Celsius, two degrees lower than Mahabaleshwar and several other cities in Maharashtra. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), this minimum was two-three degrees lower than normal for Pune.

“The current dip in temperatures is a result of cold winds blowing from the north of the country and this is likely to continue for the next few days,” said an IMD official. The maximum temperature recorded at Pune Observatory on Tuesday was 30 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal.

According to the IMD, on Tuesday, Nashik was as cold as Pune, while Jalgaon recorded a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. Comparatively, in Mumbai, it was a balmy 16 degrees Celsius, the second lowest temperature recorded this year and two-three degrees below normal, while the minimum at Colaba was 19.8 degrees Celsius, one degree Celsius below normal.

Senior IMD officials said for the past few days there has been a steady drop in the minimum temperatures and in the coming week, temperature may further fall. “While the winds are north of north-westerly, indicating cool breezes, the speed is not sufficient. The winds are not very strong but one can definitely sense a drop in minimum temperature. The city will witness a similar temperature for the next few days,” said KS Hosalikar, deputy director, IMD (Western Region).
