Next time you buy eatables at discounted rates, make sure you check the expiry date of the packaged foods and beverages. Courtesy an alert citizen, Naya Nagar police seized canned flavoured milk with elapsed expiry date, which was openly sellling in Mira Road area.

Police said the complainant, Preet Parakh saw people selling ready-to-drink packaged milk for Rs10 a can (190 ml) under a promotional campaign by the Rajasthan-based manufacturer near the railway station on Sunday. Sensing something fishy, Parakh purchased some. Price, packaging details and best buy dates were beyond the shelf-life, were fudged and covered by promo stamps.

“When I erased the stamp, the product bore a price of Rs35. It had already crossed its expiry date and was unfit for consumption,” said Parakh, who alerted police.

“On the basis of the complaint, we impounded the tempo and seized 65 cartons, each having 12 cans of the flavoured milk (780 cans). The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have been informed,” said Satish Nikam, API.

“An in-depth probe will happen. The sale of outdated food products can have serious repercussions on the consumer’s health,” said Dr Shivaji Rathod, SP.

When contacted, the FDA officials confirmed the seizure and said the milk samples will be sent for a lab test. Necessary action against the miscreants will be initiated. However, no arrest was made.
