A scooterist was killed in an accident near Jogeshwari on Western Express Highway on Monday night, while his wife was seriously injured.

Vishwas Madhyalkar, 32, and his wife Kalpana were on their way to Bandra from Goregaon around 11 pm, when a truck rammed into the scooter from the rear, at Jogeshwari.

According to eyewitnesses, the impact of the collision was such that Kalpana was flung off the scooter and fell, while Vishwas was dragged along the road for at least 30 feet. He suffered fatal head injuries. Kalpana, who sustained injuries to the head, arms and legs, was rushed to the nearest private hospital. Since Vishwas was profusely bleeding after the accident, he was rushed to Holy Spirit Hospital in Andheri, where he was declared dead before admission.

The police have arrested the truck driver and booked him under relevant sections of the IPC.

The couple was on their way to Bandra to visit Kalpana’s parents, Tuesday being a public holiday on account of Shiv Jayanti. When the duo reached Jogeshwari on the southbound arm of WEH, their vehicle was hit by the truck.

The name of the driver has been withheld by the police for the purpose of investigation.

Locals, who witnessed the accident, stopped the truck driver, thrashed him and took him to Jogeshwari police station. He has been booked under relevant sections of IPC. Doctors have said Kalpana is critical and may require brain surgery. “She has been kept under observation as her head injury is serious. She is out of danger, but is yet to be informed of her husband’s death, as her condition is critical.”

In a similar accident on Monday evening, a motorcyclist died on the spot on WEH near Dindoshi in Goregaon (E) on the north-bound road. The police said the biker was crushed between a car and a truck, which subsequently led to his death.
